Spanish Gaming Revenue Approaches €350 Million in Q3 Following Surge in Sports Betting

Spain’s Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ) unveiled impressive figures for the third quarter of 2024, with licensed operators generating a gross gaming revenue (GGR) of €348.1 million (£287.4 million). This signifies a robust phase for the Iberian gambling sector.

The revenue for this period reflects a notable rise of 14.4% when compared to the same quarter last year and a marginal 0.5% increase from the second quarter of 2024.

The casino segment was the largest contributor to this total, amassing €188 million, which marked a 17.3% rise from the third quarter of the previous year. Sports betting also saw positive trends, contributing €135.9 million, representing a 19.8% year-on-year surge. Conversely, poker revenues experienced a decline, reporting €20.5 million, down 23.5% on a year-on-year basis, while bingo managed a slight increase, generating €3.7 million, up 0.7%.

Despite the impressive year-on-year growth in sports betting revenue, the sector witnessed a 6.6% decrease from the preceding quarter. Breaking it down, pre-match betting dropped 24.3% year-on-year, whereas in-play betting enjoyed an 8.7% quarter-on-quarter increase. Horse racing betting fell by 22% over the year, yet other betting markets flourished, climbing 20.9%.

Within the casino revenue landscape, slots recorded a significant 25.8% increase compared to Q3 2023. Blackjack enjoyed an impressive 49.4% rise, while roulette saw a more modest 4.7% year-on-year uplift.

DGOJ also highlighted that the average number of active gaming accounts per month reached 1,443,615, marking a year-on-year ascent of 33.3%. Moreover, the monthly average for new account registrations stood at 153,181, reflecting a 42.4% annual increase.

Marketing expenditure for the quarter peaked at €131.7 million, which is a 40.9% increase compared to the previous year. Promotions constituted the largest spend at €66.8 million, followed by advertising at €50.4 million, and sponsorships at €1.3 million.

During this period, 77 licensed operators were operational, with 42 of them focusing on betting. Additionally, there were 51 casino operators, nine in poker, four for bingo, and two focused on contests.

Player deposits over the quarter soared by 23.9% year-on-year, reaching €1.14 billion, while withdrawals experienced a 30.3% increase, totaling €802.2 million.
