The governor of the province of Mendoza Alfredo Cornejo has told sector workers that online gambling is gaining ground over physical casinos, warning that gaming hall employees “should be concerned about the overall situation,” given shifting player preferences.
“Live gaming is unprofitable. Physical gaming is decreasing and being replaced by online gaming. These are industry trends. The casino activity has been restricted. They all should keep this in mind,” Cornejo stated during a visit to the city of San Martín.
Beyond the governor’s remark, official numbers published by the Provincial Institute of Games and Casinos (IPJyC) reveal a different picture according to local press and union leaders as the profit from the ten physical halls in the province rose from ARS 48,000 million in 2024 to ARS 76,000 million last year. That’s a 58.3% growth, well above the year-on-year inflation of just under 30%.
“Casino employees themselves should know that this is an activity undergoing restructuring. People play more on their phones than in person,” Cornejo said. “We must keep changing, so we are preparing with the Ministry of Finance and the Institute of Games and Casinos some initiatives that include all gambling,” the provincial leader added.
However, Diego Luconi, secretary-general of the Union of Mendoza Gaming and Casinos Workers (UPJCM), refuted the claims. “The idea that gaming is in crisis is not true for us, because in the province there are state casinos and private casinos, and they have grown. The annual revenue has increased by about 50%, and add to that the online gaming, which has also grown. So, the claim that gaming has declined is completely false,” he said.
The governor’s comments come after a fire broke out and caused total destruction to the annex of the Mendoza casino in San Martín the result of a failure of the electrical control system.
