Due to a technical glitch, banned players could access casino777 website

A series of technical failures has proved costly for the Davos casino, who ass fined by the Swiss Federal Gaming Board (CFMJ) to the tune of CHF970,000 (€1.06m).

The casino, operated by the Ardent Group, allowed banned players to access the casino777 website, its online gaming platform, in 2023 due to a technical glitch. A software update caused a major malfunction on the online gaming platform of the casino, located in the canton of Graubünden. According to Journal des Casinos, over a period of several days, over 150 players banned due to addiction and debt problems managed to access the site and place bets, thus generating illicit revenue for the gambling establishment. A few months later, a second technical glitch allowed dozens more banned players to regain access to the site for over two weeks and gamble without triggering any alerts.

The CFMJ determined that these failures constituted a direct violation of Swiss gambling legislation, which, as part of its addiction prevention policy, requires casinos to strictly block access to at-risk individuals. It pointed to internal organizational deficiencies that led to ‘repeated and significant breaches’ and rejected the casino’s argument that these anomalies were attributable to external IT providers.

The fine represents nearly three per cent of the casino’s gross gaming revenue (GGR) for the year in question, while the law allows for financial penalties of up to 15 per cent of GGR in cases of serious violations. The Swiss authorities are keen to hold gambling establishments accountable for their responsibilities in terms of control and prevention. It also confirms that operators remain fully liable, even in the event of external technical failures.
