Veikkaus has made 14 redundancies across its betting and igaming operations as part of its reorganisation efforts ahead of Finland’s gambling market liberalising in 2027.
The state-owned operator also said 19 employees “significant changes to their terms of employment” as part of the shift.
The confirmation comes after Veikkaus said earlier this week it was engaged in negotiations over potential redundancies.
However, the operator noted it was aiming to create between 22 and 28 new roles across three business functions as part of the reorganisation.
Veikkaus also confirmed it would be recruiting “dozens” of staff in digital channels and sports betting over the coming year.
Jarkko Nordlund, Veikkaus executive vice-president of betting and icasino, said: “We had to make some difficult decisions from a human perspective, but they are necessary for the company’s future. I want to thank those who are no longer continuing with us for their contributions.
“Digitalisation is strongly shaping our industry as well. International competition and the pace of development are extremely intense.
“Veikkaus, as a company, has decades of proud traditions and a great deal of valuable expertise.
“Alongside these strengths, we now need new kinds of skills that will help us serve our customers even better and in a more personalised way.”
In September 2024, the operator engaged with more than 600 staff over possible redundancies.
Finland’s new Gambling Act is expected to be adopted by the end of this year. It will open up the country’s market to other operators, thereby ending Veikkaus’s current monopoly.
Veikkaus will retain exclusive rights to the lottery, scratchcards and physical slot machines.
The commercial Finnish market is expected to go live in 2027, with international operators applying for licences throughout 2026.
