Veikkaus has confirmed it has discontinued 26 roles within its workforce as part of a reshuffle.
The Finnish state-owned operator is making changes in preparation for the launch of Finland’s open commercial gaming market, which is expected to go live in 2027.
The new market will be open to international operators, ending the current monopoly on the market enjoyed by Veikkaus.
Veikkaus will still retain exclusive rights to the Finnish lottery, as well as scratchcards and physical slot machines.
In addition to the 26 roles eliminated, the operator confirmed it has created 22 new positions within its organisation.
Veikkaus added that “essential changes were made to 20 employment relationships”.
Reija Laaksonen, executive vice-president of people, brand and communications at Veikkaus, explained the changes were necessary to ensure the operator remains competitive in the new market.
Laaksonen said: “Our strategic direction requires changes from us, which have now been implemented through these negotiations.
“These decisions are always difficult from a human perspective, but they are necessary for Veikkaus’ future competitiveness.”
In October, Veikkaus implemented 14 redundancies across its betting and igaming operations.
At the time, the operator attested that it would look to create between 22 and 28 positions as part of its streamlining process.
In May, Veikkaus announced the appointment of Jyri Lassi as the company’s new general counsel, effective from 1 September.
Earlier this week, a Finnish parliamentary committee submitted proposals calling for the new market launch to be pushed back by six months.
The market is supposed to go live on 1 January 2027.
