In light of the proliferation of unauthorized websites offering online gambling, the National Directorate of Lotteries and Pools (DNLQ), part of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, has issued a warning reminding that the operation of unauthorized online gambling is prohibited in the country.
The DNLQ emphasized that not only is the operation of unauthorized online gambling and betting prohibited, but also any advertising or promotion related to these activities.
According to the statement:
“The National Lottery and Lottery Directorate reports that Law 19,535, in its articles 244 and 245, along with Decree 366/017, prohibit in Uruguay not only the operation of unauthorized online gambling and betting, but also all advertising related to these services without authorization from the National Lottery and Lottery Directorate.
“Advertising is not limited to the act of offering the game itself, but extends to any advertising communication destined for the national territory, even if originating abroad.”
This includes all forms of multimedia content according to the statement. As a result media outlets are “urged to take into account current regulations when establishing their advertising guidelines.”
In Uruguay privately operated online gambling is still illegal although online sports betting is permitted via government monopoly. In November 2021 Uruguay’s Executive branch sent a bill to the senate that would permit both state run and privately run casinos to offer online casino games. The bill passed in the senate however the Chamber of Deputies postponed the vote in January 2023. There have been attempts to revive the bill but it still remains stalled in the lower house.
