The Swedish Gambling Authority (SGA) has announced the appointment of Peter Knutsson as the regulator’s new head and director general.

Knutsson’s tenure will officially start on 17 August 2026, with the appointment running for six years until 31 August 2032.

He succeeds Camilla Rosenborg in the role, who stepped down on 31 October 2025.

Johan Röhr was appointed as acting director general on 1 November until the Swedish government made a permanent appointment.

Prior to joining the SGA, Knutsson had been working with Sweden’s advertising ombudsman since August 2024.

He previously spent nearly five years as a ministerial councillor and head of unit at Sweden’s Ministry of Finance between December 2019 and August 2024.

Knutsson also served as deputy mayor and head of the procurement office for Sweden’s Nyköping Municipality from May 2017 to December 2019.

The longest role of his career to date was as head of unit for the Ministry of Justice from March 2010 to April 2017.

Across his career, Knutsson has also had stints at the Swedish Competition Authority (October 2004 to September 2007) and the European Commission (January 2001 to February 2002).

His move to SGA coincides with the regulator naming Madelaine Tunudd as chair earlier this month. Tunudd has served as vice-chair since 2019.

On Knutsson’s appointment, Sweden’s minister of financial markets Niklas Wykman said: “The Swedish gambling market should be characterised by high security and strong consumer protection, and the Swedish Gambling Authority has a major responsibility in this.

“I am pleased that Peter Knutsson, with his deep knowledge of consumer issues, has accepted the role of director general.”

Tunudd added: “With the solid experience Peter Knutsson has from, among other things, the Ministry of Finance, consumer affairs and most recently the advertising ombudsman, this will be very good for the authority.”

Röhr remarked: “I welcome the government’s decision on a new director general for the Swedish Gambling Authority and will ensure that Peter Knutsson receives a good introduction in my handover as acting director general.”

Knutsson’s arrival comes after the head of the Swedish trade body, Gustaf Hoffstedt, told EGR he was confident the government would retain the existing 22% tax rate that was implemented in July 2024.
