The government of Sweden has appointed Peter Knutsson as Director General of the country’s gambling regulator, Spelinspektionen, as he is expected to take up the position on August 17, 2026.

Knutsson has a 20-year-long experience as a manager and leader, with a background in law. Previously, he worked as the Advertising Ombudsman and as the Head of Unit at the Ministry of Finance. He also worked at the European Commission and was an advisor to the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority.

Knutsson will replace Johan Röhr in his new position, as his appointment is set to run for six years, until August 31, 2032.

Acting Director Johan Röhr stated:

“I welcome the government’s decision on a new Director General for the Swedish Gambling Authority and will ensure that Peter Knutsson receives a good introduction in my handover as acting Director at the Swedish Gambling Authority.”

Chairwoman of the Spelinspektionen, Madelaine Tunudd, also welcomed Knutsson:

“With the solid experience Peter Knutsson has from, among other things, the Ministry of Finance, consumer affairs, and most recently, the Advertising Ombudsman, this will be very good for the authority.”

In 2025, the Spelinspektionen reported that Swedish gambling revenue comprised €2.6 billion, which was a rise of 1.3% compared to 2024.
