Sun International is prioritising acquisitions in online gaming as it looks to strengthen its digital betting operations, while reassessing the role of its land-based casino portfolio.
The group reported strong growth in its Sunbet division for the half-year to June. Sunbet’s income rose 70.7 per cent to R874m, supported by a 128.7 per cent increase in slots income from greater customer activity and deposits. In contrast, income from urban casinos, the cornerstone of the group’s land-based operations, declined 1.4 per cent year-on-year to R3.2bn, as market conditions remained under pressure. Overall, the land-based market was down 3.75 per cent.
New CEO Ulrik Bengtsson, who joined in July, has outlined a strategy focused on expanding digital capabilities and adapting to changing customer behaviour, which is shifting more rapidly online. He indicated that the group is more likely to pursue online acquisitions than land-based opportunities, while continuing to leverage existing casino assets as part of a combined customer offering.
Sun International is reviewing the contribution of its land-based properties and has introduced a new operating model positioning its urban casinos as integrated entertainment destinations. The review includes measures such as casino floor optimisation, service enhancements, product innovation and marketing improvements aimed at better converting footfall.
