Sergeant joins from UK’s Genting Casinos
South African operator Sun International has appointed Mark Sergeant as Chief Operating Officer of Gaming, reporting directly to the CEO, effective 1 February 2026. Sergeant joins Sun International with over 25 years of leadership experience across the gaming, leisure and hospitality sectors. His career includes leading two of the UK’s largest casino groups, most notably as Group Managing Director of Genting Casinos UK, where he oversaw a portfolio of 35 casinos, international operations, integrated leisure resorts and online gaming businesses.
With a proven track record of managing large-scale, complex operations, Sergeant brings deep commercial expertise in driving sustainable growth, strengthening profitability and delivering multi-channel gaming experiences at scale.
Beyond operational excellence, Sergeant is known for his people-first leadership style. He has built high-performing teams, developed future leaders and championed Responsible Gaming, ensuring the highest standards of integrity, compliance and customer care.
Ulrik Bengtsson, CEO of Sun International, said: “After a thorough search, we are delighted to announce the appointment of Mark Sergeant as Chief Operating Officer: Gaming. As such, Mark is responsible for the land-based gaming revenue across the group’s portfolio.”
For the half-year to June, income from Sun’s urban casinos, the cornerstone of the group’s land-based operations, declined 1.4 per cent year-on-year to R3.2bn, as market conditions remained under pressure. Overall, the land-based market was down 3.75 per cent.
Sun International has been reviewing the contribution of its land-based properties and has introduced a new operating model, positioning its urban casinos as integrated entertainment destinations. The review includes measures such as casino floor optimisation, service enhancements, product innovation and marketing improvements aimed at better converting footfall.
Whilst the group saw good top-line growth in resorts and hotels, underpinned by its performance at Sun City, there was a softness in its gaming business with play down on its tables business.
