SJC presses for online gambling law in Chile

In a press release the Superintendence of Gambling Casinos (SJC) has reiterated the need for an online gambling law in Chile. The statement comes after Chile’s Supreme Court accepted a protection request filed by the Lotería de Concepción. The Court ordered the major telecommunications companies— Claro, Entel, GTD, Movistar, WOM, and VTR —to immediately block all online gambling websites.

“As has been pointed out repeatedly, gambling activities can only be legally carried out if they have specific authorization established by law, such as that of the Polla Chilena de Beneficencia S.A., Lotería de Concepción, racetracks, and casinos,” the SJC said.

The SJC stated that it had reported over 200 sites to the Public Ministry. “For online gambling to develop legally, there must also be a law authorizing it; as long as this does not occur, it is an entirely illegal activity. From 2018 to August 2025, the Superintendency has received 259 complaints related to online gaming platforms. The most common complaints include impediments to cashing out winnings and irregularities in the operation of the games. In light of this situation, and given that we do not have jurisdiction over these platforms, we fulfil our duty to report them to the Public Ministry, and to date, we have reported around 213 illegal websites.”

According to the SJC, illegal online gambling has a detrimental impact on tax revenue and poses a risk of exposing minors to gambling activities.

“The need to regulate online gambling is evident: a modern law would establish clear rules, effective control mechanisms, and stringent standards for transparency and responsible gaming. Only then can we protect citizens from fraud, promote a safe environment, and ensure that this economic activity operates in an orderly and responsible manner.

“At the SCJ, we continue working with technical and regulatory criteria, promoting education, prevention, and responsible gaming policies, while contributing to the legislative debate to ensure that Chile has a regulatory framework that safeguards all users and guarantees the integrity of the sector,” the SJC concluded by saying.
