The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has posted another job advert for the role of Gambling Commission (GC) chair, as the hunt for a permanent successor to Marcus Boyle continues.

Boyle announced in November 2024 that he would be stepping down as chair the following January after three years in the position.

The former Pensions Regulator CEO Charles Counsell would begin serving as interim chair on 1 February 2025, it was announced as part of the transition.

Counsell was originally appointed on a nine-month term, which would have seen him exit the role in November 2025.

At the time of writing, Counsell remains in the post. That is despite the DCMS previously planning to appoint a permanent chair last summer, with interview processes having concluded by the end of June.

However, the department has now relisted the GC chair role on its website for a second time.

Posted on 30 January, the position requires the chair to work from the GC offices in Birmingham, a commitment of two days per week and pays £59,950 per annum for a five-year term.

Applications will be open until 13 March, before sifting takes place on 23 March. Interviews are expected to end by 11 May.

The DCMS has not indicated when it expects to have a permanent chair in place, and has said all timelines are subject to change.

As per the listing, the chair will be responsible for leading the board, holding the executive to account and delivering the statutory objectives of the GC.

The job description reads: “As the Gambling Commission continues to work with the DCMS to implement the recommendations of the Gambling Act review white paper, the next few years provide a once-in-a-generation opportunity to make gambling safer, fairer and crime free.

“A new chair will help put the Commission in a prime position to grasp that opportunity in full.

“The new chair will also support the government’s plan for change, with a regulatory environment that enables economic growth while protecting children and vulnerable people from being harmed by gambling.”
