NFL urges Supreme Court to rule before end of season
The National Football League (NFL) has filed an amicus brief, calling for the US Supreme Court to grant certiorari in the Flaherty vs KalshiEx case before the end of the season.
The NFL has sided with the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) in its dispute against the prediction platform.
In the brief, the US sports league said its highest priority is “preserving the integrity of its games” and highlighted sports event contracts do not offer the same protections to its users as regulated sports betting.
States band together in Flaherty vs KalshiEx case
Alongside the NFL’s amicus brief, 39 states banded together to file a separate brief to also support the DGE’s case in the Supreme Court.
Led by Ohio, states including Alabama, Arizona, Maryland, Maine, New York and North Carolina have called on SCOTUS to rule that their laws do not prevent them from regulating sports gambling – which would include prediction markets.
A line from the combined brief read: “Only this court can turn this national disorder back on the orderly path – by providing a single answer to this nationwide legal issue.”
Kalshi partners with four tribes to launch event contracts
Kalshi has partnered with four Native American tribes to launch tribal-branded event contracts.
The tribes are the Alabama-Quassarte Tribal Town in Oklahoma and Greenville Rancheria, Alturas Indian Rancheria and Kletsel Dehe Wintun Nation in California.
It follows the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe in Louisiana pairing with the platform last month to launch its own product.
Each tribe will own the app, with Kalshi taking care of the exchange, trade execution and clearing.
Coinbase to pull out of Michigan
Coinbase has agreed to stop offering new sports-related event contracts in Michigan.
Announced by the Michigan Gaming Control Board, Coinbase will cease offering prediction markets and wind down customer accounts by 10 October 2026.
The platform failed in its attempt to gain a preliminary injunction back in August.
MGCB executive director Henry Williams said: “Coinbase joining Robinhood and Kalshi in stepping back from these unlicensed sports contracts underscores Michigan’s commitment to enforcing its gaming laws.”
Norwegian regulator blocks 62 sites including Kalshi and Polymarket
The Norwegian Gambling Authority (NGA) has sent 62 unlicensed gambling sites, including Kalshi and Polymarket, notices stating they will be blocked in the market.
The platforms have until 15 October to respond to the notice.
NGA director Atle Hamar first raised concerns about event contract platforms being offered to Norwegians back in August.
He told media outlet TV2: “It works so that we give notice before we make a decision. In practice, we have concluded.”
