Over 320,000 people self-exclude from online gambling in Brazil

The Federal Government has announced that more than 326,000 Brazilians have already closed accounts on online gambling platforms and stopped receiving advertisements from the sector, through the Centralized Self-Exclusion Platform.

The information was released on the Executive’s official social media channels, which reinforced the warning about the risks associated with gambling. In the post, the government stated that gambling is not an investment and “can lead to addiction, financial losses, family conflicts, and impacts on mental health.”

The government also highlighted the fact that the platform directs citizens to places where they can receive specialized treatment. “If gambling has stopped being fun and started causing harm, it’s time to stop. Seeking help is also an option, and the Brazilian public health system (SUS) offers specialized care for these cases,” the statement reads.

In November the Secretariat of Prizes and Bets of the Ministry of Finance (SPA-MF) published Ordinance SPA/MF No. 2,579 and Normative Instruction SPA/MF No. 31, which reinforce policies to protect bettors and promote responsible gaming in the fixed-odds betting market.

The new regulations govern the self-exclusion mechanism. This measure can be adopted in two modalities: specific self-exclusion, applicable only to one operator; and centralized self-exclusion, which blocks access to all authorized betting platforms nationwide.

Normative Instruction No. 31 defines the technical procedures for integration into the Betting Management System (SIGAP), and granted a deadline of 30 days for betting companies to implement user verification mechanisms against the centralized self-exclusion database, blocking access and refunding bettors any available funds in their accounts.

In addition to the 30-day implementation period for self-exclusion, there is a 90-day adjustment period for companies to make necessary technical adjustments to impose mandatory prudential limits.
