Several operators have announced the impending launch of their sports betting and igaming offerings in Alberta, with the newly regulated market set to go live on Monday, 13 July.
Alberta becomes the second Canadian province to launch a regulated, commercial market, following in the footsteps of Ontario, which shifted from grey to white in April 2022.
Around 50 brands have been given the green light by the regulator to launch sports betting, igaming, or both in the province, with numerous operators taking a multi-brand approach.
Among the operators to secure a licence from Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis are FanDuel, DraftKings, Caesars Entertainment, bet365 and BetMGM.
Other notable operators on the sports betting side include PENN’s theScore Bet, RSI’s BetRivers, the Bally’s-run Monopoly Sportsbook, DAZN Bet, PointsBet, BetVictor, alongside AGLC-run Play Alberta.
Online casino-only operators include SkillOnNet’s PlayOJO, Slots Magic and Spin Genie brands, Betty and Apollo Entertainment.
DraftKings, FanDuel, bet365, Caesars, PENN, BetMGM, Bally’s, BetVictor and Play Alberta will also be operating online casino alongside their respective sportsbook platforms.
The AGLC has also finalised its responsible gaming measures ahead of the regulated market rollout.
A centralised self-exclusion programme will be live from day one, which all operators will be obliged to promote in addition to allowing players to easily access the system through their platforms.
Companies must also void and refund eligible unsettled future bets if a player self-excludes before said bets are settled.
Earlier this week, EGR published its own in-depth analysis of the Alberta market launch.
Dale Hooper, general manager at FanDuel Canada, said: “Alberta represents an exciting new chapter for FanDuel Canada, and we look forward to the opportunity to bring our industry-leading casino and sportsbook experience to players across the province.
“As we plan to enter this new market, we’re committed to delivering a best-in-class entertainment experience and meaningful community engagement remains at the heart of everything we do.”
Greg Karamitis, executive vice-president and general manager of sports at DraftKings, said: “We’re thrilled to launch DraftKings Sportsbook and DraftKings Casino, as well as Golden Nugget Online Gaming in Alberta and continue expanding our presence in Canada.
“Alberta is home to a passionate sports fan base, and we’re excited to bring customers across the province our industry-leading sports betting and online casino experiences.
“Launching during one of the biggest moments in global sports, with the World Cup taking place across North America, makes this an especially exciting time to welcome Albertans to DraftKings.”
