Online Casino Promoters Take Over Russian University Website

Online casino promoters continue to target Russian state-owned public organs, preying on expired domains.

Their latest target is the former website of the State Agrarian University of the Northern Trans-Urals (GAUSZ), a Ministry of Agriculture-run seat of higher education in Tyumen, Russia.

The university was founded in 1959, and last year completed a merger with the nearby Tyumen State University, the Russian media outlet Nash Gorod reported.

The two universities now use a shared website. Online casino promoters appear to have understood this and waited for the domain registration on the old GAUSZ website to expire.

They then bought the domain and re-launched it as a Russian-language casino portal. Nash Gorod reported that, as of last week, the portal was still using university-related materials on its pages.

As of May 7, however, CasinoBeats has seen evidence that the operators have since disposed of all GAUSZ-related materials.

Instead, they now offer a range of discount codes for various illegal Russian-language online casino and slots platforms.

Online Casino: Russian University Website Taken Over

Some of these platforms appear to use the logos of license-holding Russian bookmakers. The page also contains what appears to be bogus analytics data on the winning probabilities of popular illegal slot games.

The portal claims to contain links to “certified online casinos, which have received permission to conduct gambling activities.”

Under Russian law, using and operating online casinos are both criminal offenses.

However, the portal’s creators also claim to link to mirror sites of “well-known gambling establishments,” via “hacked software.”

The Tyumen State University said neither it nor GAUSZ “has any connection to the old domain” or the material it now hosts.

Operators Snap up Expired Domains

Incidents like these are becoming increasingly commonplace in Russia. In 2024, a similar fate befell the former website of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug government, leading to public scorn.

“They’re probably trying to get us to place bets instead of paying out social benefits,” a resident quipped in a social media post that went viral.

Multiple state organs still carried links to the offending website, even after online casino promoters had taken over the site.

The Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug authorities said at the time that they had “forgotten to remove the link to the old website.”

Earlier this year, online casino promoters took over the former website of the city of Yakutsk. And in Kyrgyzstan, casino portal operators recently seized control of a website belonging to a state-owned trading company.
