The largest monthly betting total in North Carolina reached $693.3 million in March, marking the debut of live wagering. This figure encompasses both real-money and promotional bets. In November, bettors placed $638.7 million in wagers, with operators accounting for $19 million in promotional activity. March saw $456.7 million in real-money bets, augmented by $202.6 million in promotional play.
Gaming operators in North Carolina achieved record revenue of $78.1 million in November, as revealed in a December 9 report from the North Carolina State Lottery Commission. September was the second-highest month for gross gaming revenue (GGR), with operators reporting $70.1 million.
Over the first nine months of the year, bettors wagered $4.4 billion, supplemented by $434.3 million in promotional play. Promotional play peaked in March but has remained at or below $37 million monthly since June.
### Operators Contributed $14.1 Million in Taxes
For November, operators contributed $14.1 million in state taxes, with North Carolina imposing an 18% tax on GGR. Overall, the state’s betting market has shown strong performance when compared to markets of a similar size.
By way of comparison, North Carolina, with a population of approximately 10.8 million, has been competitive with Michigan, which has about 10 million residents. Although the November revenue report for Michigan is yet to be released, October saw Michigan’s handle at $560.4 million, while North Carolina’s handle was $612 million. These figures do not account for promotional deductions.
Currently, the North Carolina Lottery does not provide a breakdown of revenue by operator or sport, and the state hosts eight active sports betting platforms.
