North Carolina recovered from a record-low sports betting performance in July by reporting year-on-year growth across both revenue and handle during August.
Gross wagering revenue for the month reached $54.1 million, figures from the North Carolina State Lottery Commission showed. This surpassed last year by 60.1% and was also 138.3% more than the record low posted in July this year.
Paid wagering handle in August topped $463.8 million. After including $14.8 million worth of promotional wagers, total handle for the month was $478.7 million, beating the previous year by 29.2%. This was also 29.2% more than July 2025.
Hold tops 12.86% in August
Based on the total handle, this resulted in a statewide hold of 12.86%. This was some way ahead of August 2024 (9.1%) and this July (6.13%).
Cancelled or voided bets amounted to $4 million, while players received back $420.6 million from their sports bets. As for tax, proceeds from betting in August were $9.7 million.
Individual operator data is not publicly available in North Carolina. Leading names such as FanDuel, DraftKings, Fanatics, ESPN Bet, Bet365 and BetMGM are all active in the state.
North Carolina launched its legal online sports betting market in March 2024.
