New York’s two existing racinos advance through Community Advisory Committee’s vote

The two existing racinos in New York, MGM’s Empire City Casino in Yonkers and Genting’s Resorts World NYC have become the first to progress from the Community Advisory Committee’s vote.

MGM’s proposal for a $2.3bn expansion of its Empire City Casino and Genting Group’s bid for a $5.5bn addition to its Queens location both advanced and will now be considered by the New York Gaming Facility Location Board, which will make a final decision by December 1.

MGM said: “We are grateful to the community advisory committee and our local community for demonstrating their continued support. We look forward to continuing to drive well-paying jobs for local residents and providing hundreds of millions of dollars in annual education revenue.”

James Cavanaugh, chair of the committee, said: “If Yonkers doesn’t get one of the three licenses, Empire City Casino will wither and die.”

As well as getting table games, MGM Yonkers’ plans include the full renovation and expansion of Empire City Casino’s existing gaming areas, an expansive high-limit lounge and the addition of a state-of-the-art BetMGM Sportsbook offering retail sports betting. The plan also envisions the addition of a 5,000 person maximum capacity entertainment venue and accompanying meeting space which will welcome a variety of A-list and local performances with the design flexibility to accommodate special events, local graduations and other community needs.

Additionally, three new full-service restaurants and the renovation of existing food and beverage venues will provide high-concept dining options for guests. A parking garage with solar energy arrays and electric vehicle parking spaces are among features that demonstrate MGM Resorts’ strong commitment to sustainability. If MGM Yonkers is awarded a commercial casino license, it anticipates completing all project elements by mid-2029.

Resorts World NYC said that table game and full-casino slot machine operations could launch within six months of receiving a Gaming Facility License. RWNYC stands out as the lone bid with the sheer size and readiness to drive new incremental revenue almost immediately, for the highest and best value to New York State. An estimated 5,000 union construction jobs would be created to realize an integrated resort with a total of a 500,000-square-foot gaming floor with 6,000 slots and 800 table games; 2,000 hotel rooms; a 7,000-seat entertainment venue; more than 7,000 car spaces, over 30 food and beverage outlets, large-scale meeting space; other resort amenities and more than 10 acres of community greenspace.

Robert DeSalvio, President of Genting Americas East, said: “The vote is a testament to our mission, solidified over the last 15 years, to be the best neighbor possible here in Queens.”
