Not everyone wants casinos at Meadowlands and Monmouth Park racetracks
With New York City set to get three commercial casinos, conversations over whether New Jersey should allow casino gaming outside of Atlantic City to allow racetracks at Meadowlands and Monmouth Park to better compete, have been taking place.
Not everyone is onside, though. Three members of Congress representing New Jersey and 34 lawmakers in Trenton have expressed their opinion with a letter to Governor Mikie Sherrill and the state Legislature over proposals to allow the people to vote on the matter.
The letter said: “The answer is not to expand gaming, it’s to reinvent Atlantic City as a family resort where gaming is one of many amenities. There can be no doubt that there’s been neglect of the type of investment the city and its residents need and deserve. We look forward to working with all of you to develop a comprehensive plan to make Atlantic City the destination we all know it can be.”
“New Jersey has serious challenges and our time as elected officials would be better spent focusing on issues that matter to the people we represent, not well-heeled special interests who want to expand gaming in defiance of the clear will of Monmouth and Bergen County voters who rejected expanded gaming by a devastating margin of 25-75.”
“We hope that the threatened legislation does not come to a vote. If it does, we will work to defeat it in Trenton and at ballot boxes, just as we did the last time this bad idea was put to a vote a decade ago. We are not just ‘no’ votes, but ‘hell no’ to expanded gaming in New Jersey,” the letter added.
The last time New Jersey residents were asked voto take part in a referendum to allow slot machines and table games at the Meadowlands and Monmouth Park was in 2016 where it was overwhelmingly rejected.
