NBA orders sportsbooks to drop prop bets open to manipulation

The National Basketball Association (NBA) has told its sportsbook partners to stop offering several prop bets it considers open to manipulation, including same-player under parlays.

In a memo sent to partners including DraftKings and FanDuel ahead of the start of the season on 20 October and seen by ESPN, the league said the changes are also meant to protect players from betting-related harassment.

The banned markets are:

  • Parlays combining unders on a single player’s statistics
  • The winner of the opening tip
  • Players to miss specific shots
  • Unders on players expected to play fewer than 12 minutes

Explaining the restrictions to ESPN, NBA executive vice-president of media distribution and partnerships Scott Kaufman-Ross said: “There’s a balance between ensuring that we are removing problematic bet types but also ensuring that we don’t just move activity into the illegal market.

“And where we landed right now, we think, is the right balance of those two objectives.”

A DraftKings spokesperson added: “DraftKings supports the NBA’s efforts and is committed to continued collaboration with the league to maintain game integrity, including through appropriate limits on betting markets.

“DraftKings’ Code of Responsible Engagement is fully aligned with the league’s stance on the harassment of athletes, coaches or officials.”

The restrictions come after a series of betting scandals in the sport.

In July 2024, former Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter pleaded guilty to wire fraud conspiracy over an illegal gambling scheme, in which co-conspirators bet on his performances using inside information.

In October that year, the NBA limited bets involving players on two-way or 10-day contracts, as well as props on turnovers, fouls and missed free throws.

In early 2025, Miami Heat player Terry Rozier was investigated by the NBA over suspicious betting patterns but later cleared. He was, however, subsequently arrested by the FBI in October 2025 alongside Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups. Rozier has pleaded not guilty, and his trial is set for February 2027.

In June 2025 Detroit Pistons guard Malik Beasley was reported to be under federal investigation for gambling allegations in NBA games.
