More than 14 million Brazilian households took part in gambling in 2025

A study called “Bets on the Table, Consumption in Play,” by NielsenIQ has revealed that 26.3% of Brazilian households participated in betting games in 2025.

Talking to Brazilian news outlet Jornal da CBN, the Industry Insights Leader at NielsenIQ, Gabriel Fagundes, stated that this number represents more than 14 million Brazilian households.

“Ten percent of these bettors say they have to make swaps and choices in their consumption within this family budget. If we look at more specific segments like socioeconomic level, regions, or type of bet, this impact level on the family budget can be much higher, reaching 30%, for example.”

Among the households that bet, about 16% participate in Brazil’s biggest lottery Mega-Sena, while the second-largest group is players of the controversial online slot game Jogo do Tigrinho (Little Tiger Game).

Gabriel Fagundes highlighted that the motivation also changes – in general, 49% of bettors see bets as a way to increase income. In the case of Mega-Sena, the goal is more about changing the financial level, followed by income improvement and fun. Among supporters of the Jogo de Tigrinho the main objective is to raise income, with fun and the expectation of life change appearing next.

“Now they are already a consumer under strong pressure over time, who has lived with inflation much longer than most countries, who always has to make complex choices. And almost half of them see it as an option to increase regular income,” he said

According to the study the bettors of the Jogo do Tigrinho tend to be younger (up to 50 years old) and middle class, with a high betting frequency. The Mega-Sena bettor, on the other hand, is generally older (over 50) and with higher income, betting more sporadically.

After the Caixa lottery, the ranking of betting modalities with the greatest presence in the lives of Brazilians were: Jogo do Tigrinho (7.7%);  illegal street lottery Jogo do Bicho (Animal Game) (3.9%); betting (3.6%); others (3.2%); bingo (2%); and poker (0.1%).

Although the Jogo do Tigrinho does not represent the largest share in terms of the number of bets, it registers a significantly higher volume of financial expenditure per bettor.

According to NielsenIQ, the impact of betting on consumption shows that the intensity of spending varies according to the type of game. While 55.5% of Mega-Sena bettors spend less than R$ 30 per month, most users of the Jogo do Tigrinho say they spend between R$ 30 and R$ 100 monthly on the game.
