Sports betting stakes reached over $543m (£396.2m) in Missouri’s first month of regulated sports betting after the state went live on 1 December.

As per data from the Missouri Gaming Commission (MGC), mobile dominated, with $538.9m of handle derived through the state’s eight online sportsbooks.

Gross gaming revenue (GGR) in December came to $103.4m, although promotional spend of $125m led to operators reporting a combined NGR loss of $21.6m.

Operators returned $521,200 in taxes to the Show Me State coffers. Licensed firms are only subject to a 10% tax rate, which is in line with Arizona.

FanDuel’s online handle for the month was $212.7m and DraftKings’s reached $195.3m, as the pair’s national dominance was replicated in Missouri.

The operators generated the highest handles in the state by far, accounting for more than 75%. However, both made losses during the first month due to heavy promo spend.

FanDuel reported a $7.2m loss, while DraftKings posted a negative of $16.9m after dropping promo spend of $53.2m and $48.5m, respectively.

Bet365 surged into third in the handle race as the privately owned operator continues to ramp up US operations, with its new HQ in Denver, Colorado acting as a launch pad.

Bet365 reported handle of $57.8m and revenue of $3.8m to put it ahead of Fanatics, which has been making a significant charge across the online sports betting space.

Fanatics recorded handle of $22.8m and a loss of $1.9m. Long-term third-place player in the US, BetMGM, noted handle of $28.1m and revenue of $145,239.

Caesars closed out the top five with handle of $14.5m and a nominal loss. Circa, the surprise awardee of the untethered licence alongside DraftKings, reported handle of $1.4m.

The stats show the handle was generated from $25.7m wagers placed December.

A referendum on the legalisation of sports betting was held in Missouri during the US presidential election in 2024. The ‘Yes’ vote won narrowly with 50.23%.

Eight online sportsbooks opened on 1 December. Nine operators were granted licences, however Underdog revoked its application to focus on its prediction markets offering.
