The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) and Gambling Commission (GC) have agreed to formalise their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance the exchange of information and intelligence between the pair.
The agreement solidifies an official working relationship between the two regulators, having worked together informally in the past.
In doing so, consumers will be safeguarded against criminal activity and vulnerable players will be better protected from gambling-related harm, as per the aims of the MoU.
An MGA statement said both bodies are aware of the increased “global nature” of the igaming sector, and therefore increasing the important of international cross-collaboration.
Working together, the MGA and GC also aim to strengthen both their regulatory frameworks as well as communicate to address common challenges both regulators face.
GC CEO Andrew Rhodes said: “We welcome this agreement as a sign of our continued collaboration between the MGA and the GC.
“We’ve been working closely for some time now, and following our successful visit this summer, it is only fitting that we formalise our working relationship.”
He added: “We are keen to continue strengthening our efforts to raise standards across the industry, tackling common challenges such as illegal gambling, while also exploring future collaboration, including initiatives like shadowing and addressing key issues in areas like AML and sports betting integrity.”
MGA CEO Charles Mizzi added: “Our longstanding informal collaboration with the GC has already delivered meaningful outcomes, and the formalisation of this cooperation is definitely a step in the right direction.
“In line with our regulatory objectives, we are confident that such collaboration will allow us to address common challenges more effectively, allowing us to continuously improve on the effectiveness of our processes and framework.”
The MGA renewed its MoU with the Alderney Gambling Control Commission at the start of the year, having first entered into it in 2013.
