Mexico destroys 592 illegal slot machines in Nayarit as Morena deputy pushes statutory ban

Mexico’s Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR) destroyed 592 illegal slot machines on 9 April 2026 at the 86th Infantry Battalion in the town of Acaponeta, Nayarit state. The operation was led by the FGR’s Specialised Federal Office for Regional Control (FECOR), with participation from the National Defence Secretariat, the Navy, the National Guard, the National Intelligence Centre, the Interior Ministry, the government of Nayarit and the state prosecutor’s office. The destruction was carried out together with the incineration of more than two tonnes of seized narcotics.

According to official information cited by the Mexican press, more than 2,147 illegal slot machines have been seized across Mexico between January 2024 and March 2025.

On 17 April 2026, Morena federal deputy Pedro Haces Barba tabled a reform of the Federal Gaming and Raffles Law to write the prohibition on slot machines into primary statute.

The Federal Gaming and Raffles Law was published in the Diário Oficial de la Federación on 31 December 1947. Haces Barba said this had left penalties out of date and the legal framework unable to address the proliferation of machines in small premises.

The reform proposes prison sentences of two to four years and fines of 1,000 to 10,000 times the daily Unit of Measure and Adjustment (a unit used to determine penalties in Mexico). It would penalise those who distribute, install, operate or finance the machines, property owners who allow them to be installed, public officials who protect the activity, and those who coerce shopkeepers into hosting them through threats or violence.

Haces Barba said the machines generate benefits for organised crime and that their operation is linked to extortion, fraud, narcotics retailing and money laundering, framing the reform as a way to cut off a source of financing for criminal economies.
