Group takes over 11 new arcades and expands slot machine operation in over 100 bars
Merkur Slots Spain has completed the acquisition of a total of 11 gaming venues from the arcade operator Operjoku S.L.U. in the Basque Country.
In addition, the subsidiary of the Merkur Group, headquartered in Palma de Mallorca, will take over the operation of slot machines in 108 bars of the operator of catering equipment Operkale S.L.U. in the autonomous region of northern Spain. The acquisition was carried out in cooperation with the Spanish sales company Merkur Dosniha and marks a milestone in the expansion of the company’s brand presence: The company is tapping into the high-turnover segment of the Spanish restaurant line-up for the first time.
With this step, the East Westphalian group of companies is continuing its international expansion course. Meik Sellenriek, CEO of Merkur Operations at Merkur.com AG, welcomes this: “For the Merkur Group, Spain is a market with great importance and a future. The acquisition that has now been completed illustrates this. We are proud to welcome around 50 new employees to the company and are optimistic about strengthening our market position.”
Dominik Raasch, CEO of Merkur Games at Merkur.com AG, is also pleased: “There are strong synergies between the business areas of the Merkur Group. The successful acquisition of Operjoku and Operkale illustrates how purposefully we are using this for our sustainable growth. We are very pleased to now be able to offer our innovative gaming machines and games in our own arcades and bars in the Basque Country, one of Spain’s strongest economic regions.”
The Merkur Group employs more than 15,000 people worldwide and operates 28 gaming venues in Spain. In addition to the eleven branches in the Basque Country, there are additional locations in the holiday resort of Palma de Mallorca, in Madrid and in the provinces of Navarra and Cantabria. With the acquisition on the Iberian Peninsula, Merkur Slots Spain strengthens its position in one of the most important gambling markets in Europe and further expands its presence in the brick-and-mortar sector.
