Consumer spending on sports betting in Massachusetts reached $545.3 million in August, a hefty increase from the same month in 2024 and also higher than July this year.
Handle was 21.9% higher year-on-year, according to figures from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. Month-on-month, compared to July, player spending was 11.4% higher.
Of the total wagered on sports in August, $537.4 million went through online operators and $7.9 million was bet at retail sportsbooks.
In terms of taxable gaming revenue from betting, this reached $55.8 million. Online betting generated $55.1 million in revenue and retail $681,347.
As such, sports betting hold for the month stood at 10.23%.
DraftKings remains the one to beat in Massachusetts
Breaking down online revenue by operator, DraftKings retained a healthy lead in the state. Taking $28.7 million in revenue from $275.9 million in wagers, this resulted in a monthly hold of 10.4%.
FanDuel was again the next closest challenger, collecting $13.8 million from $129.3 million wagered, leaving a 10.67% hold. Fanatics took third with $5 million in revenue and a $49.5 million handle, meaning a hold of 10.04%.
Elsewhere in the market, BetMGM posted $4.7 million off $46.2 million in bets for a 10.17% hold. ESPN Bet completed the top five with $1.5 million from $15.8 million, meaning a hold of 9.49%.
As for land-based operators, Encore Boston Harbor took top spot with $387,454 from a $3.9 million handle, resulting in a 9.96% hold. Plainridge Park Casino followed with $293,893 from $2.8 million for a hold of 10.56%. MGM Springfield, meanwhile, did not post any revenue despite taking $1.2 million in wagers.
Casino revenue reaches $105 million
Turning to land-based casino gaming, gross revenue was $105 million, beating the previous year by 1.7%. This included $73.9 million in slots revenue and $31.1 million from table games.
Encore Boston Harbor also led this sector with $65 million in revenue. MGM Springfield took second with $24.9 million, then Plainridge Park Casino at $15.1 million.
Total tax collected by the state from gambling in August was $41 million. This included $11.1 million from sports betting and $29.9 million casino gaming.
Massachusetts sportsbooks claimed $55.8 million in revenue last month, for a 10.2% hold.
