Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese and actor Oscar Isaac are officially teaming up for a high-stakes Las Vegas casino drama series at Netflix. The streaming platform has approved the 8-part drama series, which is currently untitled.
“Sin City is calling — and Oscar Isaac is ready to answer,” said Netflix in a press release. It said the series “explores the high-stakes world of Las Vegas casinos.”
Isaac, who recently starred in Beef Season 2, will play Robert “Bobby Red” Redman, the president of the city’s most successful hotel-casino.
It will be set in modern-day Vegas, with Redman having “to make some long odds moves to try and secure his position and take more ground.”
High-Profile Production Cast
Netflix said Scorsese will be an executive producer on the project. It has been over 30 years since the veteran director released Casino.
The landmark movie was based on the real life of Frank Rosenthal, also known as “Lefty,” who ran several casinos in Las Vegas for the Chicago mafia between 1968 and 1981.
Scorsese also served as an executive producer on the Atlantic City-set Boardwalk Empire and Paul Schrader’s 2021 film The Card Counter, which starred Isaac as a gambler in Atlantic City.
Now 83, the veteran filmmaker remains highly involved in the entertainment industry. He recently teamed up with Steven Spielberg as an executive producer on Cape Fear, which is soon to be released on Apple TV.
Brian Koppelman and David Levien will serve as the writers, showrunners, and executive producers of the new series. The pair rose to fame with their screenwriting debut, the cult poker thriller Rounders, and also wrote the Vegas-set Ocean’s 13.
Other than Isaac, Netflix has not confirmed any other cast members yet. In addition to playing the main role, Isaac will also serve as an executive producer alongside Scorsese. Other executive producers include Sikelia Productions, Julie Yorn, and Rick Yorn for Expanded Media, Paul Schiff, and Beth Schacter.
Netflix Betting on More Gambling Productions
The production will be the latest in a line of gambling-related projects on Netflix. The streaming company hopes the new project performs better than last year’s Ballad of a Small Player.
The drama, which starred Colin Farrell as a gambling addict in Macao, received average reviews, with a 49% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Netflix has also commissioned a Korean gambling drama, The Dealer, created by the makers of the hit Squid Game. The project, which stars some of the country’s top actors, is now in production.
Netflix did not confirm when the new Vegas-set drama would be available to watch, but urged fans to keep their eyes “on the roulette table for more information as the series enters production.”
