The Netherlands Gambling Authority (KSA) has said it is taking a more aggressive approach to stop the promotion of illegal gambling through online media outlets.

The regulator said it began the process by approaching online magazines and newspapers and sending such sites information letters on how to prevent future violations.

The action follows the KSA receiving reports of articles being published which direct consumers to casinos not covered by the Dutch self-exclusion register, the Central Register Exclusion of Games and Chance (CRUKS).

With the adverts potentially promoting gambling to a vulnerable group of consumers registered with CRUKS, the KSA said this practice was “extremely harmful” and that it will be taking a more aggressive approach to stop the advertising.

An investigation will begin into the media outlets publishing the illegal gambling adverts, as well as the marketing agencies promoting the articles.

The agencies will be reported to the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets and the Dutch Advertising Code Foundation, with the KSA also being in communication with trade associations for newspapers to make it clear what is allowed.

By doing this, the KSA hopes to raise awareness around the promotion of illegal gambling, with the ultimate aim of the practice coming to an end.

Should it continue, the regulator will begin to dish out punishments such as fines.

Back in March, the KSA said it had contacted 42 editors of online news outlets that were alleged to be encouraging players to gamble with casinos not covered by CRUKS via paid-for ads and articles.

Last February, the KSA found 14 affiliates and news sites were advertising unlicensed operators, including to customers who had registered on CRUKS.
