India is preparing for one of its toughest laws yet on online gambling by introducing the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gambling Bill, which has already been approved by the Cabinet and is now waiting to be enforced.

If it becomes a law, all types of online gambling in the country would be banned outright. The ban would not only affect betting websites but also sweepstakes, social casino games, and even skill-based gaming platforms. Anyone found breaking the law could face heavy penalties. Operators risk up to three years in jail and fines of around $100,000.

Moreover, all gambling-related advertisements will be required to be removed from television, radio, newspapers, social media, and other digital platforms. Banks will not remain out of the target. They will have to block gambling-related payments.

Gambling in India

This decision came in just days after the government raised taxes on online gaming. The goods and services tax for gambling-related activities is set to jump from 28% to 40%. This is one of the highest rates in the world. But it was not out of the sudden. Back in April 2025, India faced an online betting crisis: 7 deaths in just a month.

According to critics, the current ban may not be the best practice for the country. Instead of targeting the illegal segment, India makes the regulated market a disaster for fair operators. Other countries that have tried similar bans have found that strict rules often weaken player protections and give more room for the illegal market’s growth.
