In this post, we will show you how to make a matrix in Google Docs.
We can make a matrix in Google Docs with the 3 below options:
- Using a Table option
- Using MathType extension
- Using Hypatia Create add-on
Option 1: Make a matrix in Google Docs using a Table
Step 1:
- Open your Google Docs. From the top menu bar, go to Insert > Table > Table templates
- Select 6×1 in the Table templates, if you want a matrix with 4 columns, as you have to leave the first and last column empty.

Step 2:
- Highlight all the cells in the table. Using the re-size cursor as shown below, you can reduce the width of all the columns.

.
Step 3:
- You can leave the first and last column empty, and type the desired numbers in all other cells.
- To enter second row and subsequent rows, just use enter key. You can use tab key to move from one column to another column.
Step 4:
- Highlight just the columns with the numbers.
- Select the vertical three-dots icon on the tool bar’s top-right side. Then select the border line size icon and select 0pt.

Option 2: Make a matrix in Google Docs using MathType extension
You can make a matrix in Google Docs using MathType extension.
This is a paid app and comes with 30 days free trial. If you will be using fraction and other mathematical equations often, I would recommend to invest in this great tool, which has over 52 million downloads.
Step 1: Go to the Google Workspace’s MathType page. Click Install.
Step 2: Select Continue and select your Google account.
Step 3: Click Allow to give this app permission to use your Google account, and click Done to complete the installation.

Step 4: Go to Google Docs and open a new black document.
From the top menu, select Extensions > MathType > Open MathType > Open MathType (from the right-side window)
Note: If you already have a Google Docs open before you installed MathType, it may not show up. Just close the Google Docs and open it again to show MathType app under the Extension tab.

Step 5: In the MathType panel, select the fourth tab > select the first matrix icon on the second row > Then select according to number of rows and columns you want.
Step 6: Enter your desired numbers inside the matrix. You can use the up and down arrow key to move around. Finally, select Insert.

Note: You can customize the font size and color in the MathType panel, if you un-click the “Use by default current font and size.
Option 3: Make a matrix in Google Docs using Hypatia Create add-on

Step 2: Insert the matrix
- In the top menu, go to Extensions > Add-ons > Hypatia Create > Insert/Edit Math
- It will open-up the Hypatia Create panel. Inside the panel, click search icon on the bottom-right, and type “matrix“. It will display different patterns of matrix, you can select bmatrix or other ones as per your requirement.

Step 3:
- Once you select bmatrix in the step 2, you can enter the number of rows and columns you want in the matrix.
- Enter your matrix numbers and select Insert. If you want, you can change the font color and size from the top-right side of the panel.

Conclusion
In the above article, you have learnt 3 ways to make a matrix in Google docs. There is another way using equation tab with subscript and superscript, but you will be able to have only 2 rows with this option, hence it was not discussed in this post. The best way is to use Hypatia Create add-on. If you are planning to use mathematical equations and expressions often, it is worth to buy MathType add-on as it has more features and flexibility.
