Sports Betting Vote Is Non-Starter in Sports-Happy Georgia
House Resolution 450 was ultimately stalled in the Georgia General Assembly, and after a 63-98 vote against it, the bill was finally dismissed altogether, and sports gambling legislation will not be debated any further during this legislative session.
Pre-filing bills for the next legislative session, though, is most likely going to happen soon, as momentum is still carrying in Georgia. The majority of residents, for one, seem inclined to back a sports betting measure if it reaches a referendum.
House Resolution 450 wanted to offer voters a simple enough choice: “Shall the Constitution of Georgia be amended to authorize sports betting in this state to provide additional funding for pre-kindergarten and HOPE scholarships,” with a simple Yes or No sufficing.
Georgia, in the meantime, is primed to welcome sports betting, as the state is already home to a number of big sports franchises, among which are the NFL Falcons and NBA Hawks, the MLB Braves, and the MLS United.
