Gambling in South Africa reaches an all-time high of $80bn

Betting booms but casinos fall due to less slots

Gambling revenue is at a record high in South Africa, with total turnover reaching R1.5tn ($80bn) in the 2024/25 financial year, according to the National Gambling Board (NGB), although the casino sector saw revenue fall by 4.1 per cent.

The NGB said the decline was due to less operational slots with slot totals falling from 21,813 operational slots in 2023/24, to 21,370 in 2024/25, marking a two per cent decline. The number of table games fell from 910 to 890 during the same period.

The Gambling Board‘s presentation to the Portfolio Committee on Trade, Industry and Competition showed that online betting now accounts for 60 per cent of gross gambling revenue.

Betting, including both land-based and online, generated R52.3bn in South Africa, or about 70 per cent of the total. Casinos followed with R16.6bn, while Limited Payout Machines (LPMs) and bingo generated R4.1bn and R1.7bn respectively.

Gauteng province, which includes Johannesburg and Pretoria, had the highest number of gamblers, followed by Cape Town and Durban.
