A job listing seeking an “exceptional leader” to become the Gambling Commission’s new CEO has gone live in recent days after former CEO Andrew Rhodes departed in April.

The top job at the Birmingham-based quango has been held by deputy CEO Sarah Gardner on an interim basis since Rhodes left the post on 30 April.

A new job ad is now listed on both the Civil Service Jobs website and a dedicated microsite powered by recruitment advisory firm GatenbySanderson.

The deadline for applications is shown as Friday 23 October.

The post comes with a £190,000 annual salary, an average of two days a week in the Birmingham office and a civil service pension.

New GC chair Ruth Evans, DCMS director general Emma Ward and former GC interim chair Charles Counsell will conduct the final panel interview part of the selection process, alongside the GC’s executive director of people services Natasha Harris and an “independent panel member”.

The job listing reads: “The assessment process is expected to include an initial application stage, a preliminary interview with GatenbySanderson, psychometric assessment, a media exercise, internal staff engagement, fireside chats and a final panel interview.”

The ad also states that the successful candidate will be required to “lead the Commission through a significant period of change” as well as “ensuring the organisation delivers against its priorities”.

Those priorities include actioning against the white paper into the Gambling Act 2005 review recommendations and leading on the “Illegal Markets programme”.

The UK Treasury previously handed the regulator £26m to fund its efforts to clampdown on the black market.

In a statement from Evans on the GatenbySanderson microsite, she described the position as “one of the most significant leadership roles in public regulation”.

The chair added: “This is an exciting time to join the Commission. We have ambitious plans for the future and a clear strategic direction, underpinned by our commitment to being an effective, evidence-led and outcomes-focused regulator.

“We are looking for a chief executive who can lead the organisation in delivering that ambition, building on our achievements and ensuring we continue to respond successfully to a rapidly changing environment.”

Evans was confirmed as the GC’s new chair in September. Counsell had previously held the post on an interim basis since February 2025.

Former GC executive director Tim Miller departed the regulator in September and has since gone on to set up advisory firm GamReg Consulting.

GatenbySanderson’s website shows the group is currently supporting the Local Government Association, various NHS Trusts and the Department for Transport, among others, with recruitment.
