The latest regulatory steps in the gambling licensing process in Gabon and Zambia have shown the development of gaming in Africa.

The Gabon National Lottery (GDJ) announced that all current gambling licenses will expire on July 7, 2026, and operators wishing to offer their services in the country must apply for a license to work under the new regulated framework.

The GDJ is the sole authority for entertainment, gambling, and games of chance in Gabon, as the regulator is trying to create a transparent and fair selection process to find new licensing partners. The GDJ’s decision to create a new legal framework aims to improve the country’s gambling sector and offer better protection for the players and the state. At the moment, Gabon’s gambling industry includes only land-based operators, but the modernization of licensing may lead to considerations of how iGaming can fit into the framework.

Meanwhile, the Zambia Gaming Association (ZGA) has warned licensed operators to address issues connected to non-compliance as inspections of betting and gaming companies continue in the country. The president of the ZGA, Noah Malungila, stated that there’s a high level of non-compliance with gaming laws, which leads to the need for inspections in collaboration with Zambia’s Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC), Immigration Department, and other local councils.

Malungila stated:

“It has come to the attention of the authority that there have been many negative issues in the way this business is conducted in the country. Additionally, these issues have been compounded by tax evasion, where compliance is not observed.”

At the moment, there are around 85 land-based and online licensed operators in Zambia.
