Flutter Brazil has appointed former Philip Morris International and PepsiCo exec Fernando Calia as its new chief legal officer.
In the new role, he will be tasked with heading up legal, compliance and institutional relations for the operator.
The move also marks Calia’s first foray into the gambling industry.
His most recent role before joining the operator was with insurance firm UnitedHealth Group, where he served as vice-president from May 2020 to February 2024.
Prior to that, Calia held the role of vice-president of legal and corporate affairs for Brazil and the Southern Cone [Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay] at PepsiCo, between January 2013 and June 2019.
The vast majority of Calia’s career was spent with tobacco company Philip Morris International between 2000 and 2012.
There he held several roles including senior counsel for Latam from 2002 to 2003, legal director for Philip Morris Brazil from July 2003 to January 2007, and assistant general counsel for litigation from October 2009 to July 2012.

Flutter Brazil was formed after the New York-listed operator snapped up a majority stake in Betnacional parent company NSX Group for $350m earlier this year.
Flutter was already live in Brazil with its Betfair and PokerStars brands prior to the acquisition.
In June, the company bolstered its C-suite with the appointment of Alvaro Garcia as its new chief marketing officer.
