We appear to have reached the end stage of capitalism in prediction markets such as Kalshi and Polymarket, where people can bet on just about anything under the sun.
To wit: Who will People’s Sexiest Man Alive be come year’s end? That market generated more than $108K at Polymarket as of publication, and quite predictably, none of it was on me.
Mention markets are also popular and easy to manipulate. With that in mind, we’re offering our “expert” picks on what FOX announcers will say during the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina on Sunday after watching way too much soccer over the past month. This market is available on Polymarket and Kalshi, and we’ll be using odds from the latter.
So, if you’re among the degenerate gamblers or savvy investors trading on this at Kalshi, let’s have some fun and make that money.
Bet ‘Yes’ on These Words or Terms
Before we get to our selections, it was disappointing not to see 1-v-1 on the list. That’s because FOX color commentator Stu Holden said it approximately 79 times during the semifinals. We can’t validate the exact number, but you’d be inebriated if forced to drink every time that term was used. How about 1-on-1 or 1-vs-1? In any case, here are the picks.
Nutmeg/Meg (-285 odds, 74% implied probability)
Watching soccer regularly, once every four years, means forgetting about several rules and expressions in the interim. Honestly, I don’t recall “Nutmeg” being used in Qatar back in 2022. Brilliant? Yes, ad nauseam.
FWIW, the term nutmeg, or the abbreviated meg, refers to a slick maneuver in which an offensive player puts the ball through a defender’s legs and comes out with it on the other side. Watch England’s Raheem Sterling get nutmegged by living legend Lionel Messi below.
VAR (-456, 82%)
If you’re new to soccer, please understand that every other goal will be disallowed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), likely because a player is offside by a centimeter. It’s maddening because goals are often very hard to come by in the beautiful game. If you’re an American sports bettor who likes to bet OVER 2.5 goals, at least 50% of your wagers will be crushed by VAR.
Golden Boot (-108, 52%)
Really surprised at these odds on “Golden Boot,” which is used to describe the award given to the World Cup’s leading goal scorer. Messi is deadlocked with France’s Kylian Mbappe with eight goals. That might not be the case if Mbappe goes wild on Saturday against an England team that gagged late against Argentina, allowing two late goals in six minutes to lose 2-1.
For some unknown reason, probably extra dollars for FIFA and FOX, the World Cup forces teams to play in a game that nobody wants to play in for third place. Neither team will be enthused about being there, but France has more motivation given Mbappe’s chance to win the Golden Boot and this being the final game for manager Didier Deschamps. Back Les Bleus on your favorite prediction market or sportsbook.
Bet ‘No’ on These Words or Terms
It’s interesting to note that Polymarket has a “goal” market, but the word must be mentioned at least 75 times. There is no such market at Kalshi, but I digress.
MetLife (-1329/93%)
A single FOX announcer will not utter this word because FIFA doesn’t allow corporate stadium names. Instead, this game will be played at New York New Jersey Stadium. Rolls right off the tongue, eh? FIFA disallows any branding or advertising outside of official tournament sponsors. FOX reportedly paid $450M to air the World Cup’s English-language broadcasts, and it won’t go against almighty FIFA’s dictates.
Super Bowl (-400, 80%)
This reference is unlikely despite both the Jets and Giants playing at MetLife Stadium. There, we said it. That’s because these New York professional football teams that play in New Jersey have been hot garbage for so long.
When you think of the Jets, Joe Namath still comes to mind. Things haven’t been as bad for the Giants, who won the 2012 Super Bowl on a circus catch by David Tyree. Still, there’s no reason to mention the Super Bowl in relation to either of these teams.
Enjoy the football, or soccer, and betting on these “five-star” picks.
