The perpetrator was able to set up a bogus investment scheme between 2020 and 2024, and convince people to plow money, eventually leading to $10 million being handed over to a shell company that the woman set up.
She maintained the ruse for as long as she could, telling investors that they did not have anything to worry about, and that the company actually had capital to cover losses should things turn sour – as they did.
The woman promised investors a 10% return on investment, which helped her secure the initial capital, but none of the money was actually allocated to any investment whatsoever.
Rather, she misappropriated the funds to fuel her lifestyle, which involved a lot of gambling. However, the $7 million she is suspected of spending away isn’t the whole picture, as the exact number of investors – 156 – may have spent more than $10 million with her.
The woman is identified as of Filipino descent and has targeted her local community, exploiting relationships and contacts she held within the community. She faces multiple penalties as well as decades in prison if she is found guilty on all charges and handed down the maximum penalty for each.
