Everton Academy graduate Martin Sherif has been charged with breaching the Football Association’s (FA) betting rules after he allegedly placed 61 bets on football over a 15-month period.
Liberian-born Sherif, who is yet to make a first team appearance for Everton, has been accused of placing the bets between 20 November 2024 and 12 February 2026.
The 20-year-old, who has spent the last two seasons on loan at Rotherham United and Port Vale, has until 17 August to respond to the charges.
The FA has not released further details on the bets placed by the player.
Sherif, who has also represented the Netherlands at youth level, scored four goals in League One last season.
Up until 2014, English football players were banned from betting on games or competitions they were involved in or could influence but could still bet on other leagues or matches.
Later the same year in August, rules were then changed to prohibit all players in the top eight tiers of English football to bet on any match in the sport anywhere in the world.
Last year, former West Ham midfielder Lucas Paquetá was cleared of betting breaches following an FA investigation. He had previously been charged with six offences in 2024.
That same year, Southport FC manager Neil Danns was fined £1,000 and slapped with a suspended six-month ban for breaking the FA’s rules on gambling, while ex-Cheltenham Town striker Ryan Bowman was hit with a 42-month ban for “serious” betting offences between 2015 and 2023.
High-profile betting cases in football in recent years include then-Brentford striker Ivan Toney, who was handed an eight-month ban alongside a £50,000 fine in 2023. Likewise, Sandro Tonali was slapped with a 10-month ban by the Italian FA for betting breaches.
Across major North American sports, former Toronto Raptor Jontay Porter pleaded guilty to wire fraud conspiracy as part of an illegal gambling scheme which resulted in the player handed a lifetime ban from the NBA in 2024.
That same year, Tucupita Marcano, a San Diego Padres pitcher, was also hit with the same punishment after he violated Major League Baseball’s gambling policy.
Sherif’s charge arrives five months after former MLS players Yaw Yeboah and Derrick Jones were issued lifetime bans for placing bets on the team they played for, Colombus Crew, in 2024 and 2025.
