The Danish Gambling Authority (DGA) has issued a DKK10,000 (£1,130) fine to a Twitch streamer who promoted illegal gambling operators multiple times on the live content platform.
Following an investigation, the DGA determined that the unnamed streamer had advertised an operator that did not hold a relevant licence to operate in Denmark’s regulated market.
The regulator reported the violations to the police, who agreed the streamer had violated the law and supported the DGA’s recommendation of a DKK10,000 penalty payment.
This development marks the second time the Danish authority has taken action against a Twitch streamer for advertising illegal games, with the first recognised offence punished in August 2023.
Initially, Twitch supported many forms of gambling on its platform but took stricter measures to restrict betting content following negative feedback from users.
In October 2022, Twitch introduced a blacklist of unlicensed gambling websites, including Stake, Rollbit and Roobet. The list was updated 10 months later to include Blaze and Gamdom in August.
The development comes just weeks after the DGA published a new video as part of its ‘Play it Cool’ campaign, designed to raise awareness among younger users of the Nordic country’s regulated market.
Looking to steer those aged between 18-24 away from black market operators, the campaign is aiming to combat the very kind of offering the Twitch streamer was found to be promoting.
Anders Dorph, director of the DGA, provided further commentary on the campaign, noting: “Fortunately, we know that the vast majority of Danes play with operators licensed by the Danish Gambling Authority.
“Our latest figures show that 91.5% of Danes’ online gambling takes place on licensed sites. We are happy about that, but it also means that almost 10% play on sites that do not have the same level of consumer protection as licensed sites.
“That is why we want to ensure that Danes know that they should keep an eye on the Danish Gambling Authority’s label when they play for money.”
