Crown Perth Casino to bring in carded play in December

Western Australia to see world first with EGM carded-only play, binding time and loss limits, and player support systems

From December 1, all players using electronic gaming machines at the Crown Perth Casino will need to use a personalised membership card that sets time and loss limits.

Western Australia will be the only jurisdiction in the world to feature EGM carded-only play with binding time and loss limits, and player support systems in the form of Crown PlaySafe, all under one roof.

The card, which will be linked to each player’s account, will cap play at 12 hours a day and 28 hours a week, and include mandatory breaks every three hours. Players can adjust their own limits within these caps but any increase to limits will take effect only after a seven-day cooling-off period. Requests to decrease loss limits are applied immediately.

Existing members will need to update their cards, while new players can sign up, taking a photo and setting their limits with the help of casino staff. The system provides on-screen tracking and monthly activity statements to help players monitor their spending. It also allows the casino to identify risky behaviour and offer support when needed.

The introduction of carded play represents a major step toward reducing the risk of gambling harm at the casino.

Racing and Gaming Minister Paul Papalia said: “The new carded play system will provide an additional safeguard for people at risk of gambling harm. Limits on gaming time and spending will help complement WA’s robust gambling rules. This is another key Perth Casino Royal Commission reform delivered, with most recommendations now complete or close to it.”

Gaming and Wagering Commission Chair Gary Dreibergs added: “The introduction of carded play for EGMs at the Crown Perth Casino is just one of many reforms that have been put in place to help achieve the Gaming and Wagering Commission’s objective of minimizing gambling harm within the WA community.

“The Commission has provided directions to the casino requiring them to implement a range of initiatives to protect casino patrons. These include maximum bet limits, restricted play periods, setting of mandatory loss limits, provision of player activity statements and mandatory carded play on EGMs, which enables the casino to monitor for signs of gambling harm.

“The GWC remains vigilant in monitoring the ongoing effectiveness of these initiatives and will continue to hold the Perth Casino licensee to the highest standards of integrity and accountability in all of its operations.”

Play period limits are already in place at Crown to help guests manage their time on EGMs, with the new technology to strengthen the ability to manage mandated break times.

Crown guests are also supported by a dedicated Crown PlaySafe team which is available 24 hours a day on-site or online.

Making the announcement as part of Gambling Harm Awareness Week, Crown Perth CEO Brian Pereira said: “Carded Play is a cornerstone of our commitment to safer gambling – it allows us to better understand and support our guests while fostering a safer environment. Carded play empowers guests with more information about their playing habits, promotes informed choices and allows earlier intervention if someone needs help.”
