Polymarket can no longer be used from Argentina after the Buenos Aires City judiciary ordered access to be blocked. The measure applies nationwide.
According to the court, the site operated without the required authorization to place bets in Argentina, which is why it was reported by the City of Buenos Aires Lottery (LOTBA), in addition to a complaint by the Argentine Chamber of Casinos, Bingo Halls and Related Establishments (CASCBA).
This led to a case pursued by the City’s Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Gambling (FEJA).
The investigation, which involved technical input from the Judicial Investigations Corps (CIJ) of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the City, argued that the site operated as an online betting system undercover under the “prediction markets” modality.
The judiciary’s resolution holds that the platform featured characteristics that significantly increased risks to users. It allowed cryptocurrency and credit card transactions, did not require identity or age verification, and enabled accounts to be created in minutes. According to the decision the site had no solid controls and therefore allows access to anyone, including minors, to place bets.
Based on the evidence gathered by the prosecutor’s office during the investigation, the court ordered the blocking of access to the platform and all its variants throughout the Argentine Republic, since although the ruling is from the Buenos Aires judiciary, the site has no authorization in any province.
“To execute the measure, ENACOM (he national communications regulator in Argentina) was instructed to carry out the necessary actions through Internet service providers,” the City Public Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.
The ruling also ordered Google Inc. and Apple Inc. to remove and restrict access to the platform’s mobile apps on Android and iOS across the country, including users already registered in Argentina.
