Chamber of Deputies creates commission to combat gambling addiction in Argentina

The Chamber of Deputies has created a commission to move forward with dozens of bills to combat gambling addiction, which have been awaiting treatment for several months.

However the newly formed “Commission on Games of Chance, Lottery and Gambling Addiction Prevention,” could take some time before it convenes due to the number of projects awaiting treatment.

The commission’s mission will be to issue reports on all matters related to “the regulation, authorization, control and oversight of games of chance in all its modalities, including online bets, digital platforms and new technologies applied to gambling, as well as on advertising, promotion and sponsorship linked to that activity.”

Additionally, the body will analyze and dispatch proposals “regarding public policies, legislation, agreements and/or treaties aimed at prevention, assistance and treatment of problem or compulsive gambling (gambling addiction), and its social, economic, and health consequences, with particular focus on the comprehensive protection of children and adolescents.”

According to the Buenos Aires Provincial Deputies News Service, currently almost all parties have at least one initiative to eradicate gambling addiction, ranging from banning advertising targeted at minors, ensuring digital wallets used by teenagers cannot be used as a payment method in casinos, creating prevention programs and free helplines, to tightening facial recognition as an authentication method. To become law, all these proposals will have to go through the new commission.

In November 2024 the Chamber of Deputies voted with 139 votes in favour of a bill that would prohibit advertising, promotion, and sponsorship of online gambling across various platforms, including social media, influencers, sports apparel, billboards on public roads, as well as print, radio, and television media. The bill was approved by a majority in the Chamber of Deputies, but still required discussion, amendments, and approval in the Senate before becoming law.

However disagreements within committees in the senate prevented any significant progress on the proposal. Last year the Health Commission, led by Senator Lucía Corpacci, was the sole body to examine the issue but it failed to produce a report.
