Buenos Aires senator moves to ban online gambling logos from clubs and stadiums

Malena Galmarini, a senator from the Fuerza Patria party in the Province of Buenos Aires, has introduced a bill that would prohibit the advertising and sponsorship of online gambling sites in sports and community spaces across the province.

The initiative aims to “prevent problematic gambling behaviour and preserve the social role of clubs as institutions for the common good.”

Under Galmarini’s proposal, gambling-related sponsorship and branding would be banned within a 100‑meter perimeter of sports and community facilities. This includes billboards and signage, the use of gambling or betting company names or trademarks to identify venues and premises, and the display of gambling brands, logos, or other identifying signs on club jerseys and other sports clothing.

Galmarini emphasised that the bill is not intended to outlaw the gambling industry or advertising in general, but rather to protect “a specific and especially sensitive space: the community sports environment, frequented by children, teenagers and families.”

The scope of the measure covers municipal sports centres, professional and amateur football stadiums, and a broad range of community sports venues. According to the senator, exposure to gambling advertising in sport “is not limited to the neighbourhood, but covers all levels of sport,” with professional football acting as the main vector for normalising gambling as part of daily life among young people.

The bill designates the provincial Undersecretariat of Sports as the implementing authority. It would coordinate enforcement with sports establishments and work jointly with the Undersecretariat of Consumer Defence and the Provincial Agency for Children and Adolescents.

If approved, municipalities would be responsible for monitoring compliance in their jurisdictions, while the Provincial Institute of Lotteries and Casinos would provide technical support in identifying operators and brands subject to the ban.

In more serious cases, the provincial Executive would have the power to suspend or revoke licences and permits related to the advertising activity of gambling operators.

The bill comes as senators in Argentina seek tighter rules over gambling. A bill introduced in the Senate by Gerardo Zamora last month targets the promotion of online betting to minors and other vulnerable groups.

The proposal would create a national framework regulating gambling advertising, promotion and sponsorship, amid growing political concern over youth exposure to betting brands through football, social media and influencer-led campaigns.

Under the initiative, gambling operators would face sweeping limits on how and where they can advertise. Media reports say the bill would ban betting ads on sports shirts, in stadiums, on official club channels, and in spaces close to schools and venues frequented by children.
