An operation launched by the Rio de Janeiro Civil Police has targeted 15 digital influencers who promote illegal online casinos, especially the popular “Tiger Game”. Investigations suggest that those involved have engaged in suspicious bank transactions amounting to up to R$4 billion.
The operation has been named “Desfortuna” (“Operation Misfortune”) and, in addition to Rio de Janeiro, warrants are being executed in São Paulo and Minas Gerais. The targets are suspected of being part of a criminal organization that promotes unlicensed gambling and also engages in money laundering.
According to Agência Brasil, investigators from the Department for Combating Organized Crime and Money Laundering (DCOC-LD) have identified that the 15 influencers make social media posts encouraging illegal gambling, making misleading promises of easy profits while flaunting a luxurious lifestyle, featuring high-end cars, international trips, and expensive properties. According to the police, these are “clear signs of enrichment incompatible with the income declared by the influencers.”
The department further points out that, beyond the segment of the criminal organization that promotes online casinos, the gang has branches such as financial operators and shell companies used to conceal the illicit origin of money.
Data on the suspicious banking transactions were obtained through the Financial Activities Control Council (Coaf), an agency linked to the Central Bank that produces information to help identify crimes such as money laundering.
