Efforts in New Jersey to allow full-scale casinos at the Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford and Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport failed to make it onto the November 2026 ballot, meaning the earliest possible voter referendum would now be November 2027.
Supporters claimed that adding the casinos to the outlying New Jersey sites would keep gambling revenue in the state in light of new casinos in New York City, whilst opponents warned that the state’s nine existing casinos in Atlantic City wouldn’t cope with any more extra competition.
Jeff Gural, owner of the Meadowlands Racetrack, said to NorthJersey.com: “I was disappointed and truthfully shocked that I wasn’t able to get it on the ballot.’
Dennis Drazin, CEO of Darby Development, which owns Monmouth Park, added: “They had to get a budget done. It’s a tough budget.”
