Betway Africa CEO shifts to chair role

Betway Africa CEO Laurence Michel has stepped up to become chair of the business.

Michel had served as the CEO for the Super Group subsidiary’s Africa-facing arm since August 2001.

The operator is yet to reveal details about a potential successor for Michel in the CEO role.

Under Michel’s leadership, Betway has secured gold medal positions in seven of its eight regulated African markets.

Africa, as well as the Middle East, accounts for the largest share of Super Group revenue at 40%.

The Betway Africa division is home to 1,000 employees, with the operator live in South Africa, Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana, Tanzania, Nigeria and Ghana.

The operator, as per its Investor Day in September, is also exploring moving into Namibia, the Ivory Coast, Angola and Ethiopia.

Betway Africa runs on its own tech stack, Synapse, while a stablecoin has been rolled out in South Africa.

Eric Grubman is the chair of the wider Super Group business, with Neal Menashe serving as CEO.

Writing about the his step up on LinkedIn, Michel emphasised his commitment to driving the company’s long-term growth and innovation in his new position.

He said: “After an incredible 20 years as CEO, I am honoured to announce my transition to chairman of Betway Africa and my continued involvement as part of the executive team at Super Group.

“This journey has been the privilege of a lifetime, and I am deeply grateful to our exceptional team, partners and stakeholders who have made this success possible.

“As chairman, I remain fully committed to driving our long-term growth and innovation.

“In this new capacity, my focus will include navigating the evolving regulatory landscape during this pivotal period for the South African gambling sector, while advancing key strategic initiatives that position us for sustainable success.

“The best is yet to come. Thank you for your continued support.”

Super Group ranked fifth in EGR’s Power 50 list for 2025, up one place from 2024.

Super Group reported revenue of $556.9m (£425.5m) for the third quarter of 2025, up 26% year on year.

This led the operator to increase its full-year guidance, with revenue now expected to land between $2.17bn and $2.27bn.
