The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) has reported record engagement with safer gambling tools and messaging during Safer Gambling Week 2025.

Last year’s edition of the initiative ran from 17-23 November, marking its ninth consecutive year of raising awareness of safer gambling tools and practices.

BGC data showed 281,000 deposit limits were set during the time period, coming from 153,960 different account holders.

The number of deposit limits marked an increase of 41% when compared to Safer Gambling Week 2024.

The trade body also noted a marked increase in the number of safer gambling messages sent to players, with the figure rising 75% year on year (YoY) to 10.9 million.

These messages were delivered through a wide range of channels including pop-ups, direct messages and personal emails.

Operators also increased their contributions to the initiative in 2025, with their total spend on safer gambling adverts increasing 68% YoY.

This led to greater visibility online, with impressions for Safer Gambling Week ads rising 27% YoY to 182 million.

Last year marked the first Safer Gambling Week since the introduction of the statutory levy, which came into force in April 2025, and marked a shift away from operators making voluntary donations to charitable gambling causes.

BGC CEO Grainne Hurst said the stats and safer gambling engagement showed the importance of supporting UK consumers amid the continued growth of the black market.

She added: “Safer Gambling Week has once again demonstrated the positive impact this campaign can have in encouraging even more customers to make use of the wide range of safer gambling tools available only in the regulated sector.

“These record-breaking figures underline the industry’s ongoing commitment to raising standards and ensuring the millions of people who enjoy a regular flutter do so in a safe and responsible environment.

“At a time when the illegal harmful black market poses a growing threat to player safety, it is vital customers remain in the regulated market, where robust safer gambling measures and protections are available.

“Our members promote safer gambling every single day of the year, but bringing the whole regulated sector together for one dedicated week – with support from MPs, peers, the regulator and other stakeholders – helps amplify those messages further than ever before.”

Last month, the BGC announced the appointment of Kane Purdy as its new chair.

The Gamesys chief took up the role with immediate effect to serve a 12-month term, replacing previous chair Michael Dugher, who stepped down earlier this year after six years in the role.
