Betfred is to cease online operations in its final US state, as the Warrington-based operator edges nearer to completely pulling the plug on its stateside venture.
Betfred’s online sports betting product will remain live in Pennsylvania until 31 July, according to a statement from the operator’s market-access partner, Wind Creek Bethlehem.
The Sportsbook at Wind Creek Bethlehem, which is powered by Betfred Sports, has not been accepting bets since 3 July.
All pending wagers, transaction history and cash-out offers will remain available to access until the end of July.
Wind Creek added that all bets that settle on or before 31 July will be paid out as usual, while markets that settle post-closing date will be paid out via a cheque.
A Wind Creek statement read: “We are working closely with regulators to ensure this process is handled securely, correctly and in accordance with all state regulations and guidelines.
“We strive to meet player and regulatory needs and expectations.”
It is unclear if Betfred’s retail sportsbook at the casino will also shutter.
Betfred secured Pennsylvania market access with Wind Creek in 2020 as part of its expansion into the burgeoning US sports betting market.
Since June 2024, when the firm was live in 10 states, the bookmaker has undertaken a structured exit from the US.
Maryland was the first market to be cut, with Ohio and Colorado next on the chopping block.
Betfred US CEO Kresimir Spajic told EGR in the summer of 2024 that a full US withdrawal was an option. Further departures from Arizona, Virginia and Iowa followed.
A closure of retail operations in Louisiana, and then Washington being pulled just before Christmas 2024, preceded an exit from Nevada. Pennsylvania was the last state left standing.
Betfred joins a long list of operators to quit the online US sports betting and igaming market; the most recent departure was from Super Group, which packed up shop in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
The Betway parent company was live with an igaming-only operation in the two states but announced it would exit the US to focus on growth opportunities elsewhere earlier this month.
Other operators to leave or close down in the US in recent years include Kindred Group and evoke, as well as a host of media-led ventures, including FOX Bet, Fubo Sportsbook and MaximBet.
Outside the US, Betfred remains live in the UK, Spain and South Africa.
