Groupe Lucien Barrière has bought the Póvoa de Varzim casino in northern Portugal, a few kilometers from Porto.
The Portuguese government has granted the group the concession for this establishment, effective May 1, 2026. The casino was previously operated by the Portuguese group Estoril-Sol, which did not submit a bid for its successor, leaving the field open to the French operator.
The Barrière group plans to undertake a comprehensive transformation of the Póvoa site, with a holistic approach focused on upgrading the casino and diversifying its revenue streams. The operator anticipates a gradual modernization of the gaming offerings, both slot machines and table games, to bring the casino in line with its international standards.
The project also includes a complete overhaul of the customer experience, with a repositioning of spaces, improved layouts, and enhanced service quality. The dining options will be redefined: the casino already has a restaurant and a bar, which the group intends to reposition with new concepts designed to broaden its clientele beyond just gamblers.
In parallel, Barrière intends to strengthen the establishment’s role as a fully-fledged entertainment venue, leveraging its 400-seat theater to develop a more ambitious and regular program of artistic and event programming. With 500 gaming stations and 11 traditional gaming tables, staffed by over 220 employees, the establishment is a key asset within the local ecosystem.
Clément Martin-Saint-Léon, General Manager of the Lucien Barrière Group’s Casino, said: “Póvoa de Varzim embodies everything that makes the projects we develop unique: a place steeped in history, a dynamic destination and genuine potential for transformation.
“Our ambition is to bring a contemporary take on the casino, envisioning it as a vibrant hub in its own right, where gaming interacts with the performing arts, fine dining, and the overall experience.”
Grégory Rabuel, Chief Executive Officer of the Lucien Barrière Group, added: “This is exactly how Barrière approaches its development today: evolving iconic establishments to reveal their full potential, without ever losing their identity.”
Another four casinos in Portugal are up for licence renewal: three in the Algarve (Vilamoura, Portimão and Praia da Rocha) and one in Espinho.
Solverde is the current concessionaire for the Espinho and Algarve casinos, while Estoril-Sol/STDM operates the Póvoa de Varzim casino..
